It has just come down the Associated Press wire that Ingmar Bergman has also died.
Bergman, who was 89, died at his home on the Swedish island of Faro, The Guardian has said.
This is a sad loss for the theatre and film worlds internationally. There is a lovely post by Peter Bradshaw who compares Bergman isolation on the island to that of Prospero - 'yet without having broken his staff'.
Watch as the Swedish nation mourns one of their most revered artists.
RIP Ingmar Bergman.

Two very sad pieces of news--Bergman dead after a life of huge accomplishment but personal anguish; the brilliant Ulrich Muhe, after being virtually unknown anywhere except Germany for his entire career, just at the moment when he had achieved international acclaim for "The Lives of Others" dead at the unseemly age of 54. A message for all of us, to seize the moment and take those risks. Also perhaps we should be a bit more generous and celebrate the talents in our midst, rather than looking for their flaws. They won't be here forever...
