Good on you Carmel! The Member for Marrickville has come to the party with a $20,000 donation to the New Theatre to assist with the costs associated to much needed safety upgrades.
I received the below note from the theatre:
"Just a quick message to let supports know that Carmel Tebbutt, Member for Marrickville, has announced that the NSW Government has stepped in to support New Theatre by providing a one-off grant of $20,000 to assist with the costly fire safety upgrades to our venue.
Over the past few months, we have managed to raised $50,000 to go towards our building upgrades, thanks to the generous support of our members, audiences and the wider arts community.
We have reached our goal of $70,000 to complete phase one of these works, and our now in a strong position to raise the funds needed to continue our building upgrades over the next 12 months. It is estimated that a further $70,000 will need to be raised to install disabled access to the King St theatre."
This is a very good news story, and one which should guarantee the future of this very important landmark.
Now, about that cafe and bar...

BORING! So she fucking should. If they weren't going to do anything about the cafe and bar idea six months ago when you first mentioned it, they're not gonna be bothered now. The sooner the independent theatre scene get over their Centrelink mentality, the better.
Is this an ARTS blog or not?
The New Theatre is a COMMUNITY House not an Independent Theatre in the "fringe/professional" sense. No self respecting professional - subsidised or not - would let a theatre in such a unique location and size langour as the New has. Get rid of the amateurs I say and let it thrive!!!!
Independent Theatre Go-er.
