I have never understood why many don't like Steven Berkoff. Some people think of him as just some type of egotistical performer and director while others think of him as one of the most talented theatre creators of the late 20th Century. 
My first experience of a Steven Berkoff production was in 2001 at the Belgrade International Theatre Festival where he presented Messiah - Scenes from a Crucifixion.
Berkoff wasn't in the original piece (although he later played the role of Satan when it returned for a London season) but he directed and wrote the piece which greatly humoured the Belgrade audience this particular evening.
Drenched in his typical humour and trademark physicality, it was a production that is a delight to remember. Jesus cast as some Machiavellan orchestrator, Satan taunting with a beautiful nonchalence and disciples in bowler hats beat any World Youth Day crucifixion recreation.
The 71 year old is back in Sydney to perform another one man show appropriately entitled One-Man.
But before he embarks on the tour, he is giving a talk at Sydney University tonight which will, fingers crossed, rattle a few cages;
Critically acclaimed UK actor, director, playwright and author Steven Berkoff will give his unique perspective on the art of provocation at an exclusive Sydney Ideas event to be held at the University of Sydney next Monday night.
In what promises to be a fascinating lecture, titled 'Provocation: How far can an artist go?', Berkoff will discuss how he has managed to stay on the fringe since he formed the London Theatre Group 40 years ago.
How far can an artist go...? In Sydney, a lot further.
Should be a great evening at the Seymour Centre. And there's even a great pub across the road for post-chat chats.
